Wow- I find it hard to put into words my experience thus far. I feel like I have been dropped into some strange fairy tale and I am not exactly sure what is real. Yesterday it was amazing to worship with the people and feel the same holy spirit that I feel when we are worshipping at AFMC. I did not know any of the words but found myself pouring out my heart in song along with the people. If only everyone could experience the way that they worship, so open and free. It felt wonderful even in the 90 degree heat for 3 hours! I definitely stepped out of my box on our walk through the city of Jacmel during a carnival. Yikes a little, ok a lot, scary especially when I had Lauren to look after as well. I suppose everything was done in fun but definitely not American at all! I was glad for the experience but relieved to be back at the hotel.
Today was our first day of real work and I am glad that I have had the previous experience of working out in the 90 degree heat throwing hay bales as it prepared me for clearing a field of rocks today. This will be the new site for the school and is so needed so it felt wonderful to know that we could help. It is definitely different working with primitive tools but creates a great sense of community when we had to rely on each other to get the job done. I will never look at an empty paint can the same way again! Who knew you could move an entire pile of dirt with a few simple paint cans and many hands?
Playing with the children is great and although there is that language barrier it is amazing what can be said without words. All they really want is your love and attention- if only kids in the USA could be as content with simple things. A simple small sticker made their faces light up with pure joyJ It has been wonderful just to spend time with them. I can’t wait to see what is in store for the rest of our trip! Hello to all my family and friends- I miss you lots!
